ボーンマスの埠頭（ピア）

　ぐずついた天気の多いエクセターです。10月中旬にボーンマスに日帰り旅行へ行ってきました。エクセターからドーセット州ボーンマスへは休憩を1度挟んでおおよそ2時間半弱。その週末は天気にも恵まれ、とても良いプチ旅行となりました。
ボーンマスはエクセターに暮らす人に聞くところ『おひさまを求めるならボーンマスだよ』と言うくらい、気候に恵まれているのだとか。私はてっきりブライトンより西にあるデボンやコーンウォール地方へ行けば行くほど温暖な気候をイメージしていたので、まさかエクセターまで来て、また東側に戻ると言うのは思ってもみませんでした。

長く美しいボーンマスの砂浜

　子連れ旅のため目的は海で遊ぶこと。まずは海の見える場所に駐車し砂浜へ。砂浜へは斜面に敷設されたWest Clif Lift（クリフ・リフト）に、大人は1.70ポンド（5歳以下の子供は無料）払って乗り込みます。乗車時間は約3分ですが、子供たちは非日常の乗り物に満足の様子でした。

　ひとしきり砂遊びをしたところで、気温が下がってきたので、フェリーに乗って（車ごと！）近郊の島へと行くことに。乗り場はボーンマスから車で20分ほどのプールと言う隣町にあるのですが、こちらは半島のようになった地形で、そのきれいな海の景色のためか、豪邸が立ち並んでいました。残念なことに当日はサンドバンクスのフェリーが故障により運休。近くのサンドバンクス・ビーチ・プレイエリアと言う、カフェも併設してある場所に移動して遊びました。こちらの公園は、砂浜の近くにあるのに、砂場もとっても充実しており、子供にはとっても贅沢でした！

　たくさん遊んだあとは、友人がおいしいと有名なボーンマスのフィッシュ＆チップス店『Chez Fred』へ連れていってくれました。お店には2か所入り口があり、片側は持ち帰り用、もう片方がレストラン。王道のフィッシュ＆チップスを頼みましたが、スカンピ（エビのフライ）もとってもおいしいとのことでした。子供たちはおもちゃパックがもらえるのですが、内容が充実の絵合わせカード、小さなイルカの木製パズル、ワークブックと色鉛筆！このおかげで、大人もゆっくり食事を楽しむことができます。
ボーンマスにいたのは実質5，6時間くらいでしたが、とても楽しく充実した時間でした。またぜひ観光できて、皆さんにも第２弾ボーンマス情報をお届けできたらと思います。

　The weather remains quite unsettled in Exeter.
I had a day trip to Bournemouth in Dorset in the middle of October. It took me about two and half hours including a short break on the way to Bournemouth from Exeter by car. The weather was great at the weekend and it turned out to be a wonderful “day out”.

　People living in Exeter say, “If you seek for sunshine – Go to Bournemouth!” because Bournemouth has much more sunny days compared to other places. Moving from Brighton, I had imagined the more you go to the West such as Devon and Cornwall, the more you have the mild climate, so it was unexpected that I have to go towards the East to seek for sunshine.

　The first thing I did was to find a parking from where you can overview the beach as the purpose of the trip was to let the children play at the sand beach. We paid £1.70 per adult (free for children under 5-year-old) to take a ride on “West Cliff Lift” that is laid on steep slope leading us to the beach from the top of the cliff. The ride was about 3 minutes only, but the children were happy as it was very unusual transportation to experience.

　We spent some time at the beach, and we could feel the temperature dropped down. So, we decided to take a ferry (we can bring our car on the ferry!) to go to a nearby island. The ferry terminal is in the neighbour town called Poole which took us about 20 minutes by car from Bournemouth. This town has a geographic feature like a peninsula and, probably because of the beautiful scenery of the sea, has a lot of gorgeous houses. Unfortunately, it turned out that the Sandbank ferry was closed due to the breakdown of the ferry, so instead, we moved to a playground called “Sandbanks beach play area” which offers café at the site. It was such a luxurious play area for playful children because it has not only a big sand play area but also it locates just next to the sand beach!

　After having played a lot in the play area, friends took us to a famous fish and chips restaurant in Bournemouth called Chez Fred. The restaurant has two entrances. One is for “take away” and the other is for the restaurant. I ordered “fish and chips” of course, and my partner said the scampi was delicious. Chez Fred offers children a “goody bag” which contains a very nice picture matching game, wooden dolphin shaped puzzle and workbook with coloured pencils! Having given this wonderful pack to children, it gave the adults some laid-back dinner time.
We stayed in Bournemouth about 5 to 6 hours only, but it was such a joyful amazing time.
I will make a visit again to Bournemouth and hopefully I can bring you some other Bournemouth information.
